Tennessee SP+ 2026: The Widest Offense-Defense Gap in the Top 25

Tennessee has a top five offense. Bill Connelly’s preseason SP+ projects it 4th in the country, in the 97th percentile of all 138 FBS teams, and only three offenses project higher. That is the headline fact about this team, and the overall number buries it.

SP+ has Tennessee 14th overall because the defense projects 44th, forty ranks from the offense, and the model averages the two into a rating that describes neither unit.

Why the overall number hides it

SP+ blends offense, defense, and special teams into one rating. An offense in the 97th percentile and a defense in the 67th average out to 14th overall, and the average describes neither unit.

I pulled all 138 FBS teams to find out whether that is actually unusual. It is the widest offense to defense rank gap of any team in the SP+ top 25. Second place is twelve ranks back, where Florida and Clemson sit at 28. The top 25 median gap is 7.

Ranks compress. A spread of forty ranks can be four points of actual difference if the middle of the distribution is packed tight, which would make the whole finding an artifact of counting instead of measuring.

It survives. Converting both sides to standard deviations from the national mean, the Tennessee offense sits 1.93 above average and the defense 0.52 above. A gap of 1.41 standard deviations against a top 25 median of 0.40. Ranks and ratings tell the same story.

The part that cuts against my own headline

44th does not mean bad. By rating this defense is 0.52 standard deviations better than the national average, 67th percentile, comfortably on the right side of the median. It is a good defense.

That is the whole problem. Tennessee is not carrying a weak unit. It is carrying a good one into a neighborhood where good does not clear the bar. Five teams have a top five SP+ offense. Oregon pairs it with the 2nd defense, Ohio State the 1st, Notre Dame the 9th. Georgia pairs it with the 5th, and that is the whole difference between Georgia at 4th overall and Tennessee at 14th. Tennessee pairs its offense with the 44th defense, a fine defense that happens to be the worst one attached to an elite offense anywhere in the sport.

The conference is less forgiving still. All seven SEC teams ranked ahead of Tennessee carry a defense inside the top 14. Alabama is the exact mirror, 13th overall on the 32nd offense and the 6th defense, one spot ahead on the opposite imbalance.

What this does not tell you

Preseason SP+ is a prior, not evidence. It is built on returning production and recruiting, with portal movement folded in, and it has watched this team play zero snaps. Every subcomponent in the preseason file comes back empty. No success rate, no explosiveness, no havoc, none of the things that make SP+ worth reading in November.

I also cannot tell you the gap predicts anything. Testing that needs historical preseason ratings I do not have, so treating this as a forecast of collapse would be me making up a result I never computed.

The gap holds by two independent measures, and it points at the one thing worth watching. The offense has already cleared a bar only five teams clear. The season turns on how far a good defense can climb, and that answer starts arriving with the first live snap.
