Three Star Report

The NHL added two games. Nashville's climb did not get shorter.

The NHL regular season is 84 games in 2026-27. Every one of the 32 clubs has 84 on its schedule, counted from the schedule rather than assumed, and Nashville’s splits 42 at home and 42 away.

That is the first time the standard has moved since the season that ended in 1996. Four of the 31 seasons since then did not run at 82. One was cancelled outright, two opened late on shortened schedules after a lockout and then a pandemic, and one was stopped partway through in March 2020. The other 27 ran the full 82. The last 84 game season ended in 1994.

Two more games is not two more chances

A playoff spot is not a finishing position, it is a points total, and points totals scale with the number of games available to earn them. Two extra games multiply every number on both sides of the comparison by 84 over 82, which is 2.4 percent.

Nashville went 38-34-10 last season for 86 points, tied for 22nd with two other clubs. At that same rate over 84 games it is 88.

The bar moves too. Los Angeles took the last Western playoff spot with 90 points. Over 84 games that same season is 92.2.

Two of five above the line, and one collapse

In 2022 the two bars are the same club, because Nashville was the lowest seed that year. In 2024 Nashville cleared the bar by one. 2025 is the outlier at 28 back. The lowest seed is the third place finisher in a division or the second wild card, whichever has fewer points, and Calgary and St Louis both finished on 96 in 2025 with Calgary missing on a tiebreak. The decode. The cutoff is the points total of the lowest seeded club in the conference that made the playoffs. Points percentage is points earned divided by points available, which is two per game.

Over those five seasons Nashville finished above the bar twice, sat exactly on it once as the lowest seed itself, missed by 3 once, and missed by 28 in the year the bottom fell out. The climb is usually short. That is what makes the size of the schedule effect worth stating plainly rather than implying it matters.

What it does and does not tell you

Nashville finished 4 points behind last season’s cutoff. On the new schedule that gap is 4.1. The climb is the same size as a rate and slightly larger in the unit anybody quotes.

It does not say Nashville is further away than it was. The rate gap has not moved at all, and the club that closes it will do so by playing better rather than by playing longer.

It does say that every points number carried over from a previous season is now measured against a different denominator. A 96 point season and a 96 point season are not the same achievement across the change, and the five year average Western cutoff of 95.2 becomes 97.5 on the new length.

One caution on that five year average. Last season’s 90 was the lowest of the five and the other four sit between 95 and 98, so 90 is not a typical bar and a club planning to clear it is planning against the softest year in the sample.
