Three Star Report

Braves fans are arguing about the wrong stat.

Raisel Iglesias has blown three saves since July 6, and the replies write themselves. He’s cooked, he’s tired, Snitker’s riding him too hard. Maybe. But the whole fight is happening inside one column of the box score, and that column has been lying to you all season.

Dylan Lee leads all of baseball with 27 holds. He has a 1.95 ERA and a 0.74 WHIP across 57 appearances, the most in this bullpen. His save total is zero. The best arm in the pen doesn’t exist in the column everyone’s mad about.

That’s the rule working as written. A save goes to whoever finishes a win with a lead of three or fewer. It doesn’t ask how many runners you inherited or whether the game was in doubt when you walked in. It measures role. Fans read it as quality.

I pulled all 387 of Atlanta’s relief appearances this season from the MLB Stats API. Iglesias owns 24 of the team’s 37 saves. But look who enters with runners already on base:

  • Lee: 30% of appearances, 17 of 57
  • Robert Suarez: 16%, 5 of 31
  • Iglesias: 5%, 2 of 44

The closer gets the ninth fresh. The seventh inning guy gets somebody else’s mess, and no column has a name for cleaning it up.

The honest part: Iglesias carried a 1.53 ERA into July 6, and the save column looked identical while he dealt and while he leaked. That’s the indictment. He’s at 5.11 across 13 appearances since the break, and FanGraphs noted in May that Lee ranks just 73rd in average entry leverage, the pen saves its expensive arms for clean late innings. Defensible bullpen management. Invisible to the stat you’re arguing about.

The box score has a column for who finished. It doesn’t have one for who mattered. I built one, and I’m going to keep filling it in.

Philadelphia has seven games left against Atlanta. It needs six of them.

Atlanta leads the National League East by four with 22 to play, and seven of Philadelphia's 22 are against Atlanta. That is the largest share of any chasing club in baseball. Split everything else and Philadelphia still has to win six of the seven.
